Acute sporting injuries that occur should be treated as quickly as possible and there are several things that can be done for soft tissue injuries that will speed recovery. Even minor sports injuries should be assessed by a qualified professional for best results. The earlier the assessment the better.
If the injury is soft tissue then the RICE procedure should be commenced. This consists of Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Rest is important in order to give the injured tissue some time to settle and heal. Ice around the injury for 15-20 minutes regularly will minimise bleeding, swelling and inflammation. Compression can consist of a moderately firm elastic bandage wrapped around the area in order to control the swelling. Elevation of the injured part is also important if possible in order to help drain and disperse the swelling. All 4 components need to be remembered for best results. Alcohol, massage, and continuation of the sport should be avoided as this can delay healing and create further damage. Getting advice and continuing treatment from an experienced sports physiotherapist is vital for best results.
If a severe injury occurs on the field usually a physio or trainer would go onto the field to assess the extent of the injury. If severe then the player would be carefully removed from the field by stretcher if necessary and certain precautions should be taken if for example there was neck or spinal damage. The injured player should not in theory be treated on the field as the game should recommence as soon as possible and the player needs to be off the field for this to occur. All necessary equipment should be at the side of the field ready to be used immediately if needed. Once off the field, the physiotherapist would commence a full assessment and treatment of the injured player.
